What optical fibers can be processed by special optical fiber fusion splicers?

  • 2025-03-14

Specialty fiber splicers are mainly used to process non-standard optical fibers, which are significantly different from ordinary communication optical fibers (such as single-mode and multi-mode optical fibers) in terms of materials, structures or performance, and are suitable for special scenarios and needs. The following are the main types of special optical fibers and their characteristics:

1. Polarization Maintaining Fiber (PM Polarization Maintaining Fiber)

Features: Maintain the polarization state of the optical signal through special designs (such as stress zones or elliptical cores), suitable for polarization-sensitive applications.

Application scenarios: fiber optic gyroscopes, quantum communications, lasers, sensor systems, etc.

Difficulty in splicing: The polarization axis of the optical fiber needs to be precisely aligned, and the splicing loss requirement is extremely low (usually less than 0.02dB).

2. Large Diameter Fiber

Features: The core diameter is large (usually greater than 200μm), suitable for transmitting high-power optical signals or multi-mode light.

Application scenarios: industrial laser transmission, medical equipment, lighting, etc.

Difficulty in splicing: The alignment and splicing loss problems caused by the large core diameter need to be dealt with.

3. Multi-Core Fiber

Features: A single optical fiber contains multiple independent cores, which can transmit multiple signals at the same time and increase the transmission capacity.

Application scenarios: data centers, high-speed communications, optical fiber sensing, etc.

Difficulty in splicing: Multiple cores need to be precisely aligned, and the splicing loss and crosstalk control requirements are high.

4. Rare-Earth Doped Fiber Fiber

Features: doped with rare earth elements (such as erbium and ytterbium) to amplify optical signals or generate lasers.

Application scenarios: fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, etc.

Difficulties in splicing: avoid contamination in the doped area to ensure the optical performance of the welding point.

5.Hollow core fiber

Features: Hollow core fiber is a type of optical fiber that guides light through a hollow central core, as opposed to the solid glass or plastic core used in traditional optical fibers.

Applications of Hollow Core Fiber

Telecommunications, Medical Devices, High-Power Laser Systems, Sensing and Measurement

Difficulties in splicing: Hollow-core optical fiber has a porous structure. Since optical fiber splicing is done by heating and melting, the hollow core will collapse due to heat.

Summary

Specialty optical fiber splicers need to adjust splicing parameters (such as arc intensity, splicing time, alignment method, etc.) according to the characteristics of different types of optical fibers to ensure low-loss, high-strength connections. For customers, when choosing a splicer, it is necessary to clarify the type of optical fiber being processed and ensure that the equipment has the corresponding compatibility and technical capabilities.
